Thomas Boulding in Virginia 1607

Elizabeth City County is now the city of Hampton, Virginia.

Thomas and his wife Mary were both 'Ancient Planters' which is a term created by the Crown for those people who were colonists to Virginia as of 1610 and had successfully fought off the Indians and starvation for at least three years.

In "Cavaliers and Pioneers' the original number of colonists between the settlement of Jamestown and the muster in 1624/25 was about 7,300. When the muster(census) was taken, there were only some 2,400 survivors - the rest having perished from Indian Massacres or starvation.

On September 27, 1638 Thomas Boulding was granted a patent for 200 acres by virtue of his being an Ancient Planter, and because he evidently paid for the transportation of Robert Clement, Nicholas Dale, John Davis and Edward Dobson.
